Abstract

The Mekong Delta is an area with special natural conditions, which is greatly affected by both upstream floods in the flood season and saline intrusion in the dry season. In about 5 years, the area has experienced two severe salinity intrusion in the dry seasons of 2015-2016 and 2019-2020, causing damage to agricultural production and lack of water for living activities. With unfavorable hydro-meteorological forecast information, the risk of drought, water shortage, and saltwater intrusion may occur in the dry season 2023-2024. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare solutions to proactively respond to minimize impacts. This article specifically analyzes the situation of saltwater intrusion, its impacts and orients some key solutions, including both immediate and long-term solutions to prevent and control the impacts of drought, water shortage, and saline intrusion on agricultural and people's livelihood.
