Abstract

Pre-treatment of bagasse by acid formic aims at separating hemicellulose and lignin components to recover the pure cellulose source for bioethanol production. The main objective of this research is to optimize the conditions of bagasse pretreatment to improve cellulose recovery efficiency for the enzymatic hydrolysis of bagasse cellulose, glucose recovery for fermentation to produce bioethanol. The research used bagasse as raw material, with the method of determining organic components in bagasse, hydrolyzing bagasse in segments, optimizing conditions of segments by response surface method, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and data processing. The experimental matrix with three independent variables was designed to study the simultaneous impacts on lignin removal and cellulose recovery efficiency. The results show that the response surface model has R2 values that are related to the lignin removal ability and cellulose recovery efficiency ranging from 0.90 to 0.99% with corresponding p values of 0.0028 and lower than 0.0001, optimized conditions at 130oC, formic acid concentration of 80% in 50 minutes resulted in lignin removal of 85.4% and cellulose recovery efficiency of 90.5%. Observing with FESEM also highlighted physical changes in the cellulose fiber structure, this result is consistent with the segment conditions.
