Abstract

This study developed an expert system to support decision-making in selecting optimal solutions and techniques for energy efficiency and emission reduction in the wood processing industry in Vietnam. The expert system includes a database of Best Available Techniques (BAT) and related consumption and emission levels, built from various sources to fit the local production reality. The decision support algorithm is developed based on the combination of Linear Goal Programming (LGP) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods. The expert system software is programmed in Lingo language combined with Microsoft Excel, consisting of a database module and an AHP-LGP algorithm support module. The research applied the proposed expert system to a specific case study in a wood processing plant in Binh Duong province, Vietnam. Based on input data of current operation, material and energy consumption, and emission reduction solutions applied, the expert system proposed optimal solutions and recommended the prioritized solution of enhancing insulation for steam, condensate, and high-temperature surface. The evaluation results are consistent with the actual situation and provide meaningful information and improvement directions for energy, resource-saving, and circular economy.
