THE IMPACTS OF THE EL NINO PHENOMENON ON VIETNAM

Abstract

Abstract: Starting from the second half of summer 2023, Vietnam is expected to face various natural disasters such as typhoons, floods, and droughts due to the influence of El Nino. The historical impact of climate change and the El Nino phenomenon - Extreme Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in Vietnam shows that these extreme weather events are becoming more severe in terms of intensity and frequency. Experts assess that weather phenomena during ENSO periods are hard to predict, causing significant harm to people, property, and having a noteworthy impact on the Vietnamese economy. By the analysis of secondary literature on El Nino, including its concept, manifestations, and impacts in various climatic regions and different aspects of social life around the world and in Vietnam, the paper presents some proposals for solutions and new directions to cope with and minimize the effects of El Nino in the near future.
