Learning approaches essential for university students

Abstract

Deep learning approaches (discovering, exploring and understanding core problem) are learning strategies that help students to achieve good competences at their major field. However, a large number of lecturers pointed out that students are not hard working enough, quite passive in learning, and do not focus on their learning tasks. Students often cope with the basic demands of their course just to pass them. This is one of the most crucial issues that need much attention from the lecturers because the current social context demands students to have “sustainable learning way” (deep learning) to enable them to get progress in their future careers. The aim of this study, therefore, is to define learning approaches, the main characteristics of deep learning approaches, and parameters of their impacts. Thus, the article presents recommendations for teaching design to encourage deep learning approaches. The results show that deep learning approaches are formed not only by using active learning (experiential learning), but also depend much on lecturer’s organizing, learning scaffolding, and encouraging high level thinking of students, etc. In addition, critical learning way also plays a vital part in helping students to get deep learning approaches.
