Realistic Mathematics Education: Theory research and some suggestion for Vietnam mathematics education curriculum development reform

Abstract

Vietnam is undertaking the renovation of mathematics education in particular, education in general, which is of scale and level as an educational reform. In this context, theoretical approaches and important research results on overseas Mathematics education will provide reliable and necessary scientific evidences for research innovation as well as Mathematics education curriculum development in Vietnam. Realistics Mathamatics Education (RME) can be considered as an educational theory, an approach in research and development of the mathematics education curriculum development. This study aims to re-systemize some important studies on RME to introduce to the Vietnamese education community, provide some suggestions for the continuing researchs, and develop the Vietnamese Mathematics education (issued in 2018). This study is basically based on research methods of materials analyses and qualitative research methods. The documents searched for RME are all in reputable journals in the ISI and SCOPUS index. The study has shown a theoretical framework for studies of RME towards two approaches: educational theory (Mathematics education) and curriculum development theory. From the results, it can be seen that the implementation of theory or mathematics curriculum according to RME is consistent with the current goal of mathematics education in Vietnam.
