Academic motivation in nursing students at Nguyen Tat Thanh University
Abstract
Learning is a continuous process. To achieve desired academic outcomes, students must have motivation to study. Positive academic motivation helps students improve the quality of their studies, foster creativity, and achieve academic success, thereby contributing to the training of competent nurses. A lack of academic motivation leads to unclear direction, discouragement, and loss of enthusiasm. Consequently, this results in ineffective learning, weak practical skills, and even withdrawal from school. With the aim of enhancing the teaching and learning quality of nursing students at Nguyen Tat Thanh University, this study was conducted to evaluate the academic motivation of 508 nursing students at Nguyen Tat Thanh University and related factors. A study was carried out from March 2024 to October 2024. Results have shown that 54.1% of students had good academic motivation. Student motivation was found to be associated with their academic year, learning outcomes, personal and family characteristics. The study findings indicate that the academic motivation of nursing students remains low. Therefore, improvements in the training program, activities of academic clubs, and stronger engagement between parents and the school are necessary.
