The status of financial using of cage-cultured red tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) farming in Ben Tre province

Abstract

    This study evaluates the current status and financial efficiency of cage-farmed red tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) in Ben Tre province in 2023, based on a survey of 60 fish-farming households. The results indicate that the total farming cost is 3,816,850 VND/m³/crop, with a total revenue of 4,952,500 VND/m³/crop, generating a profit of 1,135,650 VND/m³/crop and a profit ratio of 22.9%. For farmers' assessments, 28.3% rated the income from this occupation as "very good", while 18,4% considered it "good". The primary current challenges (recognized by 100% of the surveyed households) include rising feed prices, increasing costs of chemical treatments, worsening water pollution, and, particularly, the growing issue of saltwater intrusion. However, 95% of fish farmers still wish to continue and expand cage-farmed red tilapia production in the region.
