Evaluation of knowledge regarding contraceptive methods among first-year medical students at Nguyen Tat Thanh University during academic year 2023–2024
Abstract
This study aims to describe the current state of knowledge regarding contraceptive methods among first-year medical students at Nguyen Tat Thanh University, conducted as a cross-sectional descriptive study on 372 students via a questionnaire. The results showed that 100 % of students were aware of contraceptive methods. Specifically, 94.35 % of students recognized the necessity of emergency contraception after unprotected intercourse, and 85 % knew that this method does not prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). However, knowledge was limited, as only 74 % of students correctly understood that combined oral contraceptive pills also do not prevent STDs. Regarding condoms, 73.66 % of students were well-aware of this method's dual function in preventing both pregnancy and disease. These results indicated that while students possess a foundational knowledge, significant misconceptions remain, thereby emphasizing the need for targeted educational interventions to equip the younger generation with accurate knowledge of contraceptive methods.
