Abstract

This study evaluates the challenges and opportunities for the rice industry in Mekong Delta region of Vietnam in the context of climate change and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0). By employing a mixed-methods approach, including quantitative analysis of secondary data and in-depth interviews with 20 industry experts, the research reveals that climate change, particularly sea-level rise and saline intrusion, poses significant challenges to rice production in Mekong Delta. Results show a significant negative correlation between sea-level rise and rice yield (r = −0.72, p < 0.01), with each cm of sea-level rise associated with an average 1.5% decrease in production. However, Industry 4.0 presents numerous opportunities to address these challenges. The application of Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in water and fertilizer management has the potential to increase rice productivity by (20-30)%. The study concludes that integrating Industry 4.0 technologies into rice production can help the sector to adapt to climate change and enhance production efficiency. Key policy recommendations include investing in salt-tolerant rice varieties research, supporting the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies, and developing digital infrastructure in rural areas.
