Study on extracting rotenone-containing extract from Derris elliptica Benth and testing its efficacy against Plutella xylostella L.

Abstract

    Derris elliptica Benth root contains high levels of rotenone and is used to kill plant pests and to treat trash fish in aquaculture ponds. rotenone-containing extract from Derris elliptica Benth root is essential to reduce logistic costs. This research aims at determining the proper solvents, the ideal conditions to obtain the extracts, and the efficacy of the extracts against Plutella xylostella L. The results showed that: The process of obtaining rotenone-containing extracts from Derris elliptica Benth roots achieved the best results using acetone solvent with a ratio of 1:8 substrate/solvent and soaking time for 48 hours. The extract from the roots of Derris elliptica Benth was able to kill and inhibit the growth of silkworms at all experimental concentrations and reached the highest concentration at 250 ppm
