Abstract
This study aims to analyze the prominent characteristics of Saigon people within the context of contemporary social and cultural settings through the short stories collection Hon Ky Dai by the writer Tong Phuoc Bao. The research methodology includes social, historical, and systems approaches to examine the relationships between the characters in the work and the impact of historical and societal factors on their traits and behaviors. The findings identify three main characteristics of Saigon people reflected in the work: the inheritance and tradition development, “openness” in communication and new values reception, and community spirit of support, especially during the pandemic. The study demonstrates that Tong Phuoc Bao has skillfully depicted a diverse range of images of Saigon people, blending traditional values with the ability to adapt to modern circumstances, thus highlighting the identity and vitality of Saigon people in various contexts.
