The spirit of commercial disputes among the Vietnamese in Cochinchine through the Guest resident boycott movement in 1919
Abstract
This research aims to provide a better understanding of the spirit of commercial among the Vietnamese in Cochinchina through the Guest residents boycott movement in 1919. That spirit is driven by the overseas Chinese bourgeoisie, which dominates many important areas of the commercial economy in Vietnam. Analytical research on the meaning and lessons were drawn for indigenous people and the Vietnamese bourgeoisie through the trade war movement. In terms of meaning, the movement demonstrates the maturity and ambition of the Vietnamese bourgeoisie to replace the position of overseas Chinese bourgeoisie in commercial sector after World War I; the movement expressed the rising class consciousness of the Vietnamese bourgeoisie to escape the competition and oppression of foreign capitalist economic forces in Vietnam. Lessons are derived from the movement about solidarity spirit, continuous innovation and awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of nation.
