Breastfeeding practices of mothers with children 6-12 months of age in Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City, 2019 and associated factors

Abstract

Objectives: To identify the status of breastfeeding practices (breastfeeding in the first hour after delivery, exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and planned weaning) and associated factors to breastfeeding practices of mothers with children from 6 to 12 months of age in Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city in 2019.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with the participation of 233 mothers with children from 6 to 12 months of age from March to August in 2019.In-depth interviews with health workers at the commune health stations, husbands / mothers-in-lawrs and focus group discussions with mothers were undertaken.

Results: The proportions of mothers who has appropriate general breastfeeding practice, breastfeeding within the first hour after birth, exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months were low (23.6%, 48,1%, 26,6% respectively). 63.1% of mothers  still kept doing breastfeeding during the time of the survey. Of whom,40.8% tendeds to wean their babies at 24 months of age or older; 13.6% with babies from 18-23 months and 45.6% of mothers planned to wean  infants at the age under 18 months. Mother’s educational level and the general knowledge of breastfeeding, delivery modes, supporting and counselling in breastfeeding of health workers positively affected to the mother’s general breastfeeding practice. Besides, the notions of breastfeeding and local customs, and the mother’s jobs also affected to the breastfeeding practices of mothers.

Conclusion: Healthcare Facilities should enhance communication about the benefits of breastfeeding and instruct breastfeeding practices to mothers.
