Abstract

Some major viewpoints of General Vo Nguyen Giap on building the People Army

Experiencing two resistance wars against the French colonialists and the American imperialists (1945 - 1975), the People's Army of Vietnam had evolved from a young guerrilla force to modern regular main force corps and divisions with the ability to conduct large-scale joint operations, capable of confronting and defeating powerful invading forces. At the end of the two resistance wars, the People's Army was recognized as one of the most courageous, battle-hardened and invincible armies in the world. As an outstanding military man of the nation, in the roles as Secretary of the Central Military Commission (Bí thư Quân uỷ Trung ương), Minister of Defense, Commander-in-Chief of the People's Armed Forces, General Vo Nguyen Giap made particularly important
contributions in the process of advising, directing, organizing, building and developing the Vietnam People's Army. Those contributions stem from the General's system of scientific and profound viewpoints and arguments on the formation of army forces, on the organizational structure of the revolutionary army; on the position and role of political work, cadre work and weapons and equipment in the people's army... This article aims to present and analyze the above viewpoints of the General in a comprehensive and specific manner, thereby contributing to the process of researching and understanding the military ideology of General Vo Nguyen Giap in particular, and to the cause of building the Vietnam People's Army today in general.
