Abstract

In the 1940s, piratical activity posed a severe threat to the Nguyen Dynasty’s security and economic safety. Regarding protecting the dynasty’s security and order, preventing and fighting against piracy was among the significant challenges of the early emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty. Although experiencing a brief reign within seven years (1841 - 1847), King Thieu Tri paid much attention and took measures to prevent and fight against piracy. Reward and punishment were strictly implemented, contributing much to limit the expansion of piracy and ensure security for islands and their relevant waters. King Thieu Tri’s anti-pirate policies towards his army officers laid invaluable experience for the successive Kings.
