CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE AND AESTHETIC VALUE OF VISUAL ARTS OF THE LOTUS SYMBOL IN THE HUE TEMPLE
Abstract
The lotus flower is always associated with Buddhism. According to Buddhism, the lotus flower is regarded as a symbol of strength, power and sacredness, reverence for Buddha. Therefore, lotus flowers appear commonly in Buddhist architecture. For Hue temples from the Nguyen lords to the Nguyen dynasties, the lotus symbol always occupies a dominant and central position in architectural decoration. They not only carry symbols with certain spiritual functions and meanings dedicated to Buddhist culture, but also reflect aesthetic values of shaping through language of form, carving and decoration. In addition, the article also affirms the talent of the ancient artisans in expressing the lotusshaped language through bronze and stone materials. That has contributed to the success of fine arts from the Nguyen Dynasty to the Nguyen Dynasty.
