THE UPS AND DOWNS OF PHAM PHU THU'S LIFE (1821-1882) - A PIONEERING REFORMER IN VIETNAM IN THE LATTER HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY
Abstract
Among the proponents of reform in the country during the latter half of the 19th century, Pham Phu Thu is regarded as a pioneering reformer alongside other reformists such as Nguyen Truong To, Nguyen Lo Trach, and Dang Huy Tru. Coming from a family with a Confucian tradition, with an intelligent nature, Pham Phu Thu continuously achieved remarkable accomplishments on his path to success. He passed the imperial examinations and held important positions under the Nguyen dynasty. Pham Phu Thu's life and career were not without difficulties and hardships. Nevertheless, throughout his life, Pham Phu Thu demonstrated the exemplary qualities of a virtuous and dedicated individual, serving the royal court wholeheartedly and caring for the people as his own, making significant contributions to the Nguyen dynasty and the regions where he served as an official
