Abstract

Experimental studies have shown that reinforced concrete beam behavior when subjected to torsion goes through two stages: linear elastic and nonlinear linear elastic. There are many different theoretical methods to consider the behavior at the linear elastic stage such as linear elastic theory, skewbend theory, thin-walled tube theory or models that consider concretetensile stress such as the modifile compression field model and the soft truss model (SMMT) for torsion that have been verified with experiments. The soft truss model (SMMT) for torsion is developed based on the soft truss model for shear (SMM) to consider the torsional behavior of RC beams when considering the Poision coefficient and the out-of-plane bending phenomenon of the concrete struts. Calculation results compared with 53 tets in experimental studies have shown the accuracy of the SMMT model as well as the safety of linear elastic theory when considering the elastic behavior of reinforced concrete beams subjected to twisted.
