Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze and evaluate the capacity of water storage and water supply for agriculture, industry and domestic use in the context of climate change of the irrigation system 3/2 of Tra Vinh province. Firstly, the current state of irrigation structures was assessed; water storage in canal systems and water demand of water-using sectors according to climate change scenarios in the period of 2030 and 2050 were analyzed; thereby the water supply capacity of the irrigation system was then assessed. The results show that the current state of the irrigation system is almost complete and closed, ensuring the ability to prevent/mitigate saltwater intrusion and the ability to store fresh water for the whole region in the dry season. Water demand including domestic, agricultural and industrial uses in 2021 for the whole year and 6 months of the dry season is 394.02×106 m3 and 318.95×106 m3, respectively. Water demand will increase by about 130% to 195% in the year 2030 and 2050, respectively. In the dry season months of the year 2030 and 2050, the water storage in canal system meets from more than 7% to nearly 30% of water demand. If only supplying water for domestic and industrial uses, the ability to meet the demand increases from 35% to nearly 90%.
