Assessment of the factors causing surplus materials at projects in Ho Chi Minh city
Abstract
Inefficient management of materials, especially surplus materials at projects in Ho Chi Minh City, contributes to increasing costs for investors, contractors, and other stakeholders (design/construction consultant, supplier …). Therefore, it is necessary for investors, contractors, and stakeholders to identify the factors that cause surplus material generation and develop solutions to effectively dispose of surplus materials to reduce construction costs. This paper presents the survey results in terms of the factors causing the generation of surplus materials of the parties at the projects in Ho Chi Minh City. The survey was conducted through questionnaires and statistical analysis. The survey results ranked the causes of surplus material generation, through the EFA (Exploratory Factor Analysis) method, and the results showed the main groups of factors causing the generation of surplus materials, namely: design, management, ordering, testing, awareness, preservation, culture; in which the most important group of factors was the group of factors related to the design.
