Exploring factors influencing the work motivation of employees in the Construction industry

Abstract

ABSTRACT

The work motivation for workers and staffs is one of the particularly important aspects that determine the success or failure of construction enterprises. In terms of human resource management, motivating employees to improve labor productivity still remains many problems that can affect the completion of set goals and tasks. The study aims to determine the factors influencing the work motivation of employees of construction projects in Ho Chi Minh City. The research was conducted based on the viewpoints of workers and engineers who had experiences in different types of projects from construction contractors, project management consultants and investors. Data were collected from 72
valid surveys; and the Relative Importance Index (RII) method and Exploring Factor Analysis (EFA) technique were selected to rank. the critical factors that influence on work motivation of employeesIn this study, 14 variables identified were allocated in five groups of factors that influence the work motivation of employees in construction including: 1) Management style - Evaluation and recognition of results - Relationship with managers - Economic situation of workers; 2) Salary and bonus - Labor safety - Working environment; 3) Promotion opportunities - Work goals - Proficiency in work; 4) Welfare policy - Relationship with colleagues; 5) Supervision consultants, investors have strict requirements for the quality of construction and installation work. The research outcomes confirmed the factors influencing the work motivation which helps employees to understand the downside and the positive in their work.These outcomes also helps managers to have a holistic picture as well as to have specific and relevant policies that can be applied to boost morale and improve the work performance of employees to achieve the prescribed plan and schedule.
