Abstract

Idioms are a difficult language element, causing many difficulties for students in the translation process. This article presents a survey on the English Languages juniors’ ability to recognize English and Vietnamese idioms in their learning and translating, the difficulties they meet, and the strategies they apply to translate the texts with idioms. The research was carried out in both quantitative and qualitative directions, through surveys, interviews and tests, to answer 3 research questions: How is the junior’s ability to recognize idioms? What are the difficulties that students meet when translating idioms? And what are the strategies they often apply in the process of translating idioms? The results of the study show that students' ability to recognize idioms is only average; students still have difficulty in translating idioms, and more importantly, the students are still confused with the strategies to use in the translation process.
