Abstract

With the hope of raising local people’s awareness of harmful cultural practices that have been existed for a long time, the research was conducted to eliminate out-of-dated customs in the area with many ethnic minorities like Ha Giang. In fact, these practices have much negative impacts on the local people’s lives and socio-economic development there. The study uses ethnographic background knowledge to systematize, collect and analyze data to identify the influence of harmful cultural practices on ethnic minorities’ lives in Ha Giang. From then, an educational program to eliminate harmful cultural practices at school levels are proposed and implemented with the support from the Education & Training department. It is attached to the local education curriculum to get rid of harmful cultural practices in schools effectively. Eliminating harmful cultural practices is a long process, because it is related to customs, beliefs,... that have been passed down from generation to generation in the subconscious of ethnic minorities. Nowadays, there are many measures to eliminate harmful cultural practices, but education is the shortest, most effective one.
