Abstract

Research objectives: (1) To describe the botanical characteristics of Gnetum parvifolium collected in Hoa Binh; (2) To examine the chemical constituents of this plant. Subjects and methods: The plant sample was collected from Hoa Binh, and its morphological features were observed and described using the morphological method for plant identification. The chemical components were analyzed using standard qualitative chemical reactions and thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Results: The plant collected in Hoa Binh was identified as Gnetum parvifolium. It is a climbing vine with many nodes, thick opposite elliptical leaves, simple male inflorescences, and branched female inflorescences growing on older branches. Qualitative chemical tests showed the presence of tannins, saponins, lipids, anthranoids, and flavonoids. TLC was performed using two solvent systems: toluene : ethyl acetate: formic acid and n-hexane : ethyl acetate, which provided optimal separation. The TLC plates were observed under UV light at wavelengths of 254 nm and 366 nm and visualized using 10% sulfuric acid reagent.
