Abstract

Urolithiasis in dog is relatively popular, it is noted that many cases were brought in the veterinary clinics in Ho Chi Minh City for examination and treatment. This study was conducted to determine the efficacy of syrup product extracting from Phyllanthus amarus for treating urolithiasis and preventing the reformation of stones in dogs after the stone removal surgery. In the experimental treatment (n=32), the experimental dogs were administered 2ml syrup/kgBW/day/PO, 30 minutes before meals and the control dogs were treated by the routine regimen of the clinic. The studied results showed that the recovery rate of dogs in the experimental group treated by Phyllanthus amarus was higher than that of the dogs in the control group (53.85% versus 41.18%). The number of dog detected to have crystals in urine in the experimental group was lower than that in the control group after 3 months monitoring (3/13 versus 10/17). However, there was no statistically significant difference. In the trial prevention (n=28), there was a significant difference on the number of crystals presenting in urine of dog between the experiment and control groups, 2 months after surgery. 1 among 15 dogs treated with syrup was found to have crystals in urine, meanwhile crystals were found in 6 among 13 dogs in the control group. This study proves that the Phyllanthus amarus syrup can be used in prevention and treatment for canine urolithiasis.
