Abstract

Metastrongylus species (lungworms) are parasitic nematodes in the respiratory tract, in both domestic and wild pigs. These parasites have ability to cause pneumonitis and bronchitis, and cause mortality in pigs if not treated promptly. Up to date, four lungworm infection cases in humans have been reported, all in Europe. In Viet Nam, there was no specific studies on the origin of the Metastrongylus disease in the natural host (native pigs) conducted. The autopsy
result for 1,163 native pigs in Dien Bien province showed that there were 2 species of 1908. Among the collected samples, species Metastrongylus elongatus accounted for 98.86% and species Metastrongylus pudendotectus accounted for 1.14%. This article described the morphological characteristics of two species of parasitic nematodes in the respiratory tract of the native pigs in Dien Bien province.
