Epidemiological characteristics and risk factors associated to Newcastle disease in tre and ac chickens in Tien Giang province
Abstract
This study was conducted from October 2022 to October 2023 to determine the prevalence and risk factors associated to Newcastle disease (ND) to recommend the effective ND prevention solutions in raising tre and ac chickens in Tien Giang province. The prevalence of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) was studied randomly on 90 swab samples collected from the healthy chicken flocks in 3 urban economic zones of Tien Giang province and 50 spleen samples from
the ND symptomatic chicken flocks using realtime RT-PCR. Risk factor analysis was conducted through owner interviews using questionnaires in 93 households (31 households with ND-positive in spleen samples, 62 households with ND-negative samples). The studied result showed that the prevalence of NDV from the swab samples in the tre and ac chickens was 13.33% and 11.11%, respectively. The prevalence of NDV from the spleen samples in the tre chickens was
75.00% and in the ac chickens was 38.89%, particularly in the chicken group at 1-4 months old. In multivariate analysis, factors including exposure to wild birds, infrequent cleaning and disinfecting (2 days or more), and improper ND vaccination procedures increased the risk of ND in chickens, with odds ratios were 4.83, 7.84, and 14.29, respectively.
