The meaning development of Sino-Vietnamese word giải pháp

Abstract

The word Giải pháp was borrowed from ancient Chinese but is not a self-created Sino-Vietnamese word. In Chinese, following the disyllabization of the character Giải, the usage of Giải pháp became more specific due to competition with words such as phương pháp, giải trừ, hóa giải, giải cứu, giải thích, giải đáp, giải quyết. However, in Vietnamese, giải pháp is used simultaneously with phương pháp and phương pháp giải quyết.

Over time, the meaning of giải pháp has also narrowed down due to similar competition. Character-splitting and analogy are the two reasons in practical leading to the misunderstandings of the etymology of giải pháp. Phương pháp giải quyết is just one outcome of the disyllabization of giải pháp, but is not an abbreviation of the phase phương pháp giải quyết.
