Abstract

On September 1, 1858, the French-Spanish coalition opened fire on the Son Tra peninsula, starting an expedition to invade Vietnam. After occupying six provinces of Cochinchina, the French colonialists consecutively invaded Tonkin twice in 1873 and 1882. During the fight against the French to protect Hanoi citadel (1882), Junior Doctor of Martial Arts Nguyen Long emerged as one of the effective assistants to Governor Hoang Dieu. He and other mandarins upon discussing defeat strategy, trained soldiers in martial arts for soldiers and fought bravely to defend Hanoi Citadel. His image has become a typical fighting example of the Vietnamese people in the patriotic movement against the French in the late 19th century.
