Abstract

The Ministry of Planning and Investment, in collaboration with other ministries, sectors, localities and with cooperative support from such international organizations as UNDP, DANIDA, SIDA, was charged with the implementation of the project "Assistance for the formulation and realization of the National Agenda 21 of Vietnam (VIE/01/021)". The project had four major research components, of which one focused on the policy for sustainable development. The resulting outcome of the project made a positive contribution to designing a sustainable development policy system in Vietnam in the period of enhancing industrialization and modernization of the country. The project VIE/01/021 also produced a set of books denoting research outcomes, which serve as a source of reference documents for formulating a policy system and planning in relation to sustainable development. The bookset was consisted of ten volumes, focusing on ten diverse themes, including one volume was about "Vietnam’s policy for sustainable development: Current situation and recommendations".

The core content of this volume provided an objective and all-embracing assessment on the sustainable development policy system of the country; an analysis of gains and shortcomings in implementing the Law on Environment (1993) and resolutions, decisions adopted by the Communist Party and the Government of Vietnam pertaining to the Strategic Direction for Sustainable Development (or the National Agenda 21 of Vietnam); and at the same time, reasonable recommendations with a view to revising and continuously improving policies on the realization of the strategic direction of sustainable development in Vietnam.
