  • Cao Xuân Hạo

Abstract

A sad news received by the Vietnamese language
studies circle and readers fond of language-related
sciences: on 16 October 2007, Prof. Cao Xuan Hao
passed away in Hochiminh city as a consequence of a
sudden stroke. The talented scientist deceased, though
he had enough time to leave behind him valuable
Vietnamese language studies works for the Vietnamese
science, such as “Basics of functional grammar” (the
Social Science Publisher, 1991), “Phonology and
linear, reflections on postulates of the contemporary
phonology” (the Hanoi National University Publisher,
2001), etc.
It is unforgettable for readers of thousands of pages of
foreign literature and linguistics translated by Prof. Hao
with such works for life as “War and Peace” (the
Culture Publisher, 1961), “Suffering Path” (the
Literature Publisher, 1976), “Methods of structural
linguistics” (the Education Publisher, 2001),
“Vietnamese language, Vietnamese literature,
Vietnamese people” (the Youth Publisher, 2001), etc.
In remembrance of the deceased, the Social Science
Information magazine wishes to introduce the first
chapter, namely Theoretical base, in a well known work
“Phonology and linear, reflections on postulates of the
contemporary phonology” of Prof. Cao Xuan Hao. This
work was translated from the full original text of
“Phonologie et linéarité. Réflexions critiques sur les
postulats de la phonologie contemporaine”, written in
1980, and published in 1985 in Paris by the French
Society of Linguistics and Anthropology. Prof. Cao
Xuan Hao had no intention to publish this work.
However, accidentally, as restated by Prof. Cao Xuan
Hao, in 1985, the work was published and translated
into Vietnamese in 2001. Praise has been given to this
work by both foreign and national scientists.
