Ensuring the right to participate in politics of women in the globalization context in Vietnam today

Abstract

The right to participate in politics is included in the category of civil and political rights. It is one of the basic rights in the system of human rights set forth by the United Nations in various international instruments from the 1950s and 1960s. Notwithstanding to that, in reality, the proportion of women involved in the public and political life in many countries remains low as compared to that of men. In some parts of the world, the right to participation of women is infringed; women are “excluded” from the political, economic and social life.

Taking an approach comparing between the right to participate in politics of Vietnamese women and that of women in some countries around the world, the article attempts to examine the system of laws and policies of Vietnam in ensuring the right to participate in politics; assess the achievements recorded in such areas as: the right to vote and stand for election, the right to participate in state and social management.

Finally, having indicated objective and subjective causes of the limitations in ensuring the right to participate in politics of Vietnamese women, the author proposes some solutions to deal with the above-mentioned situation.
