Abstract

In celebrating the 450th anniversary of Lord Nguyễn Hoàng  moving to the South to build up his career (1558-2008), the Vietnam's History Society in Collaboration with Thanh Hoá People's Committee convened a Seminar on "Lord Nguyễn and the Nguyễn Dynasty in Vietnam's history from the Vita to XIXth century", in  Thanh Hoá on 18-19 October. The event drew profound interest from over 600 participants with 92 papers contributed by historians and scientists working for research institutes, universities, and cultural bodies across the country, as well as researchers from China, Taiwan, Republic of Korea, Japan, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, etc. Participants through discussions at the plenary session and in three panels overwhelmingly agreed that though criticisms against Lords Nguyễn and the Nguyễn Dynasty in the past can be justified, it is time to change. The Seminar hailed contributions made by Lord Nguyễn and the Nguyễn Dynasty to the expansion of national territory, unification, building up a united nation and an enormous cultural heritage as part of the whole nation's cultural treasury.

The Social Sciences Information Review has a pleasure to publish the concluding remarks at the Seminar presented by Prof. and People's Teacher Phan Huy Lê, the President of Vietnam's History Society.
