Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences - Fifty years of building and development

Abstract

At the celebration ceremony of the 55th anniversary of the founding of Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) and the reception of the Golden Star Medal, Prof. and Dr. Đỗ Hoài Nam, a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, President of VASS had a keynote speech in which he reviewed a course of 55 years of building and development of VASS. Before being now named as VASS, it was initially established on 2nd

December 1953 in Tân Trào, Sơn Dương of Tuyên Quang with only 14 staff and in the course of more than half a century known respectively as: Vietnam Committee for Social Sciences, National Centre for Social Sciences and Humanity. Currently, VASS has 31 affiliate institutes, 8 functional units, 17 institutions running post-graduate training programs, 30 science journals and magazines of which 6 magazines are published in English. VASS now has up to 1,425 staff.

Prof. Đỗ Hoài Nam summarized major achievements recorded by VASS in respect of science research, creation of a data bank of social sciences, training and international cooperation. He also indicated the current discrepancies in scientific activities as well as heavy assignments facing VASS in the years to come.
