The nexus between educational institution and market economy – a sociological perspective

Abstract

The nexus between educational institution and economy, law, culture or any other societal institution is reflected in a way of how educational bodies, including schools and education authorities to interact with value systems, economic standards, law and culture. In Vietnam, this relationship is facing not a few problems, such as inequaltiy in access to education, derailment in applying the market mechanism in primary education, and persistent left-over of a subsidy-based management regime at the graduate level.

In this article, the author discusses the nexus between educational institution and economy in the context of boosted national industrialization, modernisation and an operating socialist-oriented market economy in our country. The relationship rebounces around such issues as what is the relationship between education and economy and what are the issues arising from such relationship? The author also makes some suggestions of how to ensure a harmonized relationship between education and economy for the purpose of sustainable social development in Vietnam.
