Assessment of the knowledge, attitude and practices of aquatic product sellers at the markets in Nghe An province

Abstract

In this study, 384 aquatic product sellers at the fish markets in Nghe An province were interviewed by the direct interview method with a previously designed questionnaire. The results of the survey showed that: in the fish markets the majority of the aquatic product sellers was female (89,1%), mainly in the working age (18-40 years old). The rate of the aquatic product sellers having seniority over 5 years were the highest (57,3%). The educational level attained by the majority of the aquatic product sellers was primary and secondary. Television was the most efficient information source (52,6%) on food safety and was approached by many aquatic product sellers (52,1%). 74,9% aquatic product sellers met requirements on the aquatic product safety knowledge, 70,1% of the aquatic product sellers met requirements on the aquatic product safety attitude and 74,8% aquatic product sellers met requirements on the aquatic product safety practice. There was a positive correlation between knowledge, attitude and practice on the aquatic product safety. The aquatic product sellers had high knowledge points; they would also have high attitude points and high practice points (p<0,05). Therefore, it is necessary to enhance the media and education about aquatic product safety for these employees in order to change their attitude and practice to raise the efficiency of aquatic product safety management in Nghe An.
