Abstract

This research analyzed the language characteristics in captions and videos on TikTok in aspect of structure, creativity (new usage), and argument structure organization. We conducted a survey of popular students’ captions and videos on the TikTok (from September 2023 to January 2024). Through statistics and description, it can be seen that captions are mainly composed of phrases and sentences. The structure of main-secondary and isotopic clusters tends to be fixed according to idioms, which creates attraction. Regarding the way of organizing argumentation, students mainly use analogy argument method to create conclusions in the same direction. In addition, the students use the opposite type of conclusion through the intermediate inference step. New ways of rhyming with images, anagram, new words, parallels, repetitions, spoonerism with English interludes, literary/song/musical materials are also used. Research results show students' style, personality, and flexibility in using language on TikTok. However, it is necessary to pay attention to the influence of usages that lose the clarity of Vietnamese.
