Abstract

In Korean history during the Three Kingdoms period (I - VII centuries), Goguryeo was one of the kingdoms with a larger territory than Baekje and Silla. The three most powerful countries on the peninsula dominated and suppressed each other, while at the same time invading and conquering other countries. Goguryeo often had to deal with invasions by Chinese dynasties, especially the invasions of the Sui and Tang dynasties. With its unique location, Goguryeo had to take measures to deal with Chinese dynasties and expand into the southern region of the peninsula. A diverse and flexible foreign policy is an important factor in the long-term survival and strong development of the Goguryeo kingdom. Through historical and logical methods, the article focuses on clarifying the relationship of the Goguryeo kingdom to Chinese dynasties through the ages. Thereby, the article draws some conclusions about the role of foreign policies in the existence of the Goguryeo kingdom in particular and the countries on the Korean peninsula in general during the Three Kingdoms period.
