Abstract

If education is one of the important functions of literary works, then Nguyen Dinh Chieu's compositions are typical evidences. In his works, Nguyen Dinh Chieu expressed the concept of promoting morality, considering morality as a measure of human value. Therefore, the character images he built are almost identical to moral symbols, serving the purpose of moral education. This article uses a combination of the main research methods of literary history and interdisciplinary research methods to clarify the moral values of individuals and the moral values of community people in writing by Nguyen Dinh Chieu. Through five typical images (the virtuous man, the grateful man, the scholar who resisted the French, the intellectual who did not cooperate with the enemy, and the peasant farmer), Nguyen Dinh Chieu's poetry does not only review a series of traditional moral values but is also the place where new values are formed in the history of national literature. Those are also life lessons that have topical significance in the current context of international integration and educational innovation.
