EXERCISING WORKERS’ RIGHTS IN THE WORKPLACE AS A CONTRIBUTION TO ENSURING DECENT WORK IN VIETNAM TODAY
Abstract
Decent work constitutes a fundamental pillar in the development of a socialist-oriented market economy in Vietnam. Ensuring workers’ fundamental rights-such as the right to a formal employment contract, fair remuneration, a safe and healthy working environment, participation in social insurance schemes, and meaningful workplace dialogue-is central to achieving decent work. Empirical findings indicate that while most workers’ rights are generally respected, persistent challenges remain, including excessive overtime, reliance on non-wage income, and incomplete social insurance coverage. Addressing these issues requires the State to further refine labor legislation, enhance the effectiveness of labor inspection, and enforce compliance with labor standards. Trade unions should strengthen their representative capacity, promote legal literacy, and facilitate collective bargaining. Simultaneously, employers must ensure full compliance with wage, insurance, and occupational safety regulations. Close coordination among the Government, trade unions, and employers is crucial to safeguarding workers’ rights and fostering decent work across all sectors of the economy.
