THE ROLE OF DEVELOPING MEDIATION SKILLS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING ACCORDING TO THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES AND A CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS WITH TRANSLATION
Abstract
In 2001, the Council of Europe issued the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) with important guidelines for language teaching and learning activities across Europe, which many countries around the world, including Vietnam, have referred to. According to the CEFR, alongside three familiar communication activities: reception, production, and interaction, learners also need to develop language proficiency through a fourth communication activity - mediation. By analyzing the recommendations of the CEFR and some research works on mediation by German researchers, the research paper clarifies the similarities and differences between translation and mediation, demonstrates the importance of integrating mediation into modern language teaching. It also provides suggestions for suitable text types and tasks to enhance learners' mediation skills in foreign language classrooms.
