The determinants of participation in global value chains: The case of Vietnamese SMEs

Abstract
The study aims to evaluate the factors affecting the global value chain (GVC) participation of SMEs in
Vietnam. Based on the ADB questionnaire, authors conducted surveys at 204 SMEs in the Northern provinces.
Using the probit regression model, the study finds that factors firm age and foreign investment are significantly
and positively associated with Vietnamese SMEs participation GVC, while the other factors such as gender and
education have the opposite effect.
