The impact of Chinese FDI in ASEAN and recommendations

Abstract

ASEAN is increasingly becoming important destinations of which Chinese foreign direct investment (FDI) to serve
the objective of ensuring energy security, making use of the TPP preferences, implementation of new foreign policy
of China. In the process of investment, Chinese FDI has made positive contributions to the economic growth of the
ASEAN countries. However, FDI in ASEAN from China have many differences compared to FDI from other investors
in motivation, fields, methods... Particularly, Chinese FDI in ASEAN is not only motivated by economic profit but also
involved in political Chinese diplomacy, so some investment have a negative impact for the ASEAN countries such as
environmental pollution, little technology transfer, causing unstable political situation, social security... The article
focuses on clarifying some of the impact of Chinese FDI in ASEAN, from which implications for attracting and efficient
use of Chinese FDI in Vietnam.
