A REVIEW ON BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES OF GAMMA-AMINOBUTYRIC ACID
Abstract
Gamma-aminobutyric acid is widely present in microorganisms, plants and animals, and is known to be the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Its physiological functions are related to modulation of synaptic transmission, relaxation of neurons, prevention of insomnia and depression. Gamma-aminobutyric acid is also known for its many biological activities such as antihypertensive, antidiabetic, anticancer, antipsychotic and neuroprotective. Gamma-aminobutyric acid can be considered as a potential alternative therapy for the prevention and treatment of various diseases. This article focuses on describing the biological activities of Gamma-aminobutyric acid to see its important role in human health.
