Concerning the building a regional-level social sciences library

Abstract

Comparing with other countries in the region, including those in the Southeast Asia and East Asia, many in their talks about Vietnamese social science more often indicate limitations and weaknesses of the country’s social science. For them, there is no “bell” that can possibly “be ringed in other country” by Vietnamese social science or social science activities in Vietnam.

Virtually disagreeing with this statement, at the Review Meeting 2009 of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, held on 11 January 2010, attended by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyễn Thiện Nhân and leaders from various ministries and sectors, the Institute of Social Science Information delivered a presentation, in which it reviewed the role and contributions of social science to the country’s development in the past twenty years, the situation and status of the Social Sciences Library. Also in the presentation, the Institute recommended that the Government should take note of a project for the construction of a regional-level social sciences library.

It is true that as emphasized in the presentation it is hard for the social science and humanity of Vietnam to compete or gain the equal footing with other regional counterparts in about ten or twenty years. However, if a project for the construction of a social science library, equivalent to the treasure of good materials on its own is realized, then in a short time the country can certainly have a large information center - social sciences library about which those who are interested in the East and Vietnam can not help without making their acknowledgement.

In many fields, Vietnamese scientists may be the successors of what have been already created by the world. Nevertheless, if we can manage to mine the heritage left over by our ancestors, which are still contained in the archives of the Social Sciences Library at 26 Ly Thuong Kiet street (Hanoi), then it is possible that Vietnamese social science can make contributions as forerunner studies at least in respect of Vietnamese and Oriental cultural characteristics.

The social science information magazine in this volume would like to bring to our readers a part of this presentation.
