Abstract
Recently, the proposal to make English a second language in schools has become a prominent topic of discussion in Vietnam. This article presents the findings of a survey conducted with 487 high school graduates on the issue. Employing exploratory factor analysis (EFA), correlation and ANOVA tests, the study suggested investments in three areas: School infrastructure, human resources and enhanced teaching efficiency, which include adopting communicative approach to teaching and assessment (four macro skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing), and using English as medium of instruction (EMI) in teaching natural and social science subjects. The study also revealed no statistical difference between learners’ residences and their suggestions. These findings provide practical insights for the national efforts in establishing English as a second language in Vietnam’s schools.
