Smoking cessation effectiveness of face-to-face counselling following by telephone counselling in hospitalized respiratory patients at Bach Mai hospital

Abstract

Objectives: 1. To determine the tobacco quit rate of face to face counselling in hospitalized respiratory patients; 2. To evaluate the smoking cessation effectiveness of face to face couselling in hospital following with telephone counsellings post discharge in respiratory patients.

Material and Methods: Current or recent quit smoker (in the past 1 month) patients, admitted in Respiratory Center – Bach Mai Hospital from October 2017 to October 2020; a randomized intervention study, parallel comparison of two groups: usual intervention and active intervention.

Results: 164 patients, 79 in usual intervention group, 85 in active intervention group. At 6 months follow-up, the 7-days point prevalence quit rate, 1 months, 3 months, 6 months continuous quit rates (reported by a family member and validated by expired CO) are 64,56%; 64,56%; 63,29%; 46,84% in usual intervention group, respectively and 75,29%; 75,29%; 74,12% and 55,29% in active intervention group, respectively.

Conclusion: Patients in active intervention group were more likely to quit smoking at 1, 3 and 6 months follow-up than the usual intervention group but the difference was not significant.
